The central character in this play is the Sardarjee or Sergeant Singh, a turbaned and fresh immigrant in America. His background as a new immigrant provides much opportunity for humorous and farcical interaction between Americans and the newly arrived. This makes the play very topical, since immigration is a hot topic in the nation today. The Sardar is saddled with extraordinary job responsibilities on the first day of his first job, as a receptionist in the office of Professional Building. Here, there is a false bomb scare and the professionals occupying the building, decide to flee their offices. As they leave, all of them prevail upon the Sadarjee to mind their offices. He does this with the great enthusiasm of a person who is new on the job. Consequently he gets to be a judge, a general, a professor, a doctor, a priest, and a musician, all in one day. At the end of this extraordinary job performance, he gets a promotion. This gives him the opportunity to express his newly discovered mission: to teach Americans the right kind of English, so they can communicate more effectively.
