This book is an informative scientific work, intended for young scientists and lay readers, in which an in-depth analysis of the power and the effects of nuclear power is given. It not a book for children, although any child who comes across it will be enriched. It is a book primarily addressed at the young, questioning mind; at people who are finding out about the great questions of our modern world.

The authors cover a range of issues associated with the area of nuclear physics, but the work is concerned predominantly with atomic power as a form of weaponry. The reader is guided through the complexities of the concept of the atom, binding energy and nuclear fission. The work goes on to discuss the different types of atom bomb with their destructive effects as well as their purpose in terms of military and civil defence . Finally the authors offers an image of life after a hypothetical nuclear war.

The book is instructive and thought-provoking. The authors encourage the reader to consider the future as well as the position and responsibilities he or she will hold within it. The language employed is clear and intelligible, but patronizing.


About the Authors:

Dr Fazal Ahmad Afzal
He holds the degrees of MA and MSc from the Punjab University, Lahore and Ph.D. from the University of New South Wales, Australia.
In addition to teaching Physics in National Institutions, he has also taught Physics for 5 years in Nigeria. He is author of six books. He retired from Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission as Chief Scientific Officer.

Dr Nadeem Ahmad Afzal
He holds the degrees of MBBS from the King Edward Medical College University, Lahore and MRCPCH and MRCP from the College of Physicians and Surgeons, London. He is author of more than 20 research papers, and is a Consultant in Paediatric Gastroenterology at the Southampton University Hospital, UK.

Dr Cedric George Bullard
He holds the degrees of MB and BS from the University of Sydney and the degrees of BA and PhD from the University of NSW, Australia. He has held senior academic posts in sociological and statistical teaching and research in Australia, and senior hospital positions He now practises privately as a psychotherapist.
