It's Labor Day weekend in Lake Tahoe! Summer is ending and the celebration is in full swing. The Blue Angels cavort high in the bright sunny sky and the Hell's Angels annual Tahoe ritual is in high gear. Music fills the Tahoe Basin, echoing across the gleaming lake to the North Shore. The white sandy beaches are packed with tourists, while the locals hike away from the crowds down to the hidden nude beaches. The party is on!

But this year's Labor Day party is different. This party has a new, exciting element-and it has the entire Tahoe Basin involved. The Mark Twain Casino Hotel has an unwanted visitor-and all of the experts in the world don't know how to handle it.

Suddenly the thunder of the Blue Angels in the Lake Tahoe sky was joined by thunder emanating from closer to the earth. From the Nevada side of Highway 50 a deafening roar heralded the approach of a hundred or so members of the Oakland Chapter of the Hell's Angels riding up from the Carson Valley, making their annual Tahoe Labor Day stop a little earlier than usual to participate in the festivities. Coincidentally, just as the Hell's Angels roared around the bend from one direction, fifty or so Tahoe Tramps rumbled in from the California side, decked out in full Tramp regalia for the big event- all of them attired in soft black leather with pink rose insignias, their signature pink Harley Roadsters glinting sleekly in the sun. The two groups pulled up thirty yards apart, revving their engines loudly and eyeing each other menacingly.

With the bikers blocking the highway, there was only room for one lane of traffic in each direction, and even as he watched the surreal scene unfold, Benny the Torch could see the Nevada State Police starting to turn back traffic.

They were shutting the Tahoe Basin down.
