Les roues ruisselantes qui tournent, jour et nuit, au fil du fleuve pour en élever l'eau bienfaisante, remplissaient le ciel de leur gémissement, et un jeune savant me lisait dans un manuscrit arabe une histoire d'amour et de religion... ce sont de ces heures divines qui demeurent au fond de notre mémoire comme un trésor pour nous enchanter.

Pourquoi me trouvais-je ce jour-là dans cette ville mystérieuse et si sèche d'Hamah, où le vent du désert soulève en tourbillons la poussière des croisés, des séleucides, des assyriens, des juifs et des lointains phéniciens ?

J'y attendais que fût organisée une petite caravane avec laquelle j'allais parcourir les monts Ansariehs, pour rechercher dans leurs vieux donjons les descendants des fameux haschischins.

Et ce jeune savant, un irlandais, chargé par le british museum des fouilles de Djerablous sur l'Euphrate, une heureuse fortune venait de me le faire rencontrer qui flânait comme moi dans les ruelles du bazar.

Deux européens perdus au milieu de ces maisons aveugles et muettes, sous un soleil torride, ont tôt fait de s'associer. C'était d'ailleurs, cet irlandais, un de ces hommes d'imagination improvisatrice qui savent animer chaque minute de la vie et chez qui l'effroyable chaleur de l'été syrien développe cette sorte de poésie qui vient du frémissement des nerfs à nu, une poésie d'écorché vif. Après avoir parcouru la ville et poussé jusqu'aux jardins, qui la prolongent durant quelque cent mètres sur le fleuve, nous avions vu tout et rien. Quel esprit se cache dans Hamah ?
