In großer Erregung umstehen Bauersleute, Knechte und Mägde das Gehöft des Servaz Amareller, Bauers im Hemmernmoos, und besprechen den unerhörten Fall eines großen Gelddiebstahles. Nach den im Jammerton immer wieder vorgebrachten Beteuerungen des dürren, kleinen Amarellers ist eine Brieftasche mit über fünfhundert Gulden, dem Betrag für verkauftes Vieh, aus einer gut versperrt gewesenen Truhe gestohlen, ganz rätselhaft entwendet worden. Gestern noch überzeugte sich Servaz Amareller durch Abzählen der Noten von dem Vorhandensein des Geldbetrages worauf die Truhe wieder sorglich verschlossen und der Schlüssel im Ofenloch versteckt wurde. Heute ist das Geld verschwunden, wiewohl niemand Fremdes im Hause gesehen und der Schlüssel im Aschenversteck vorgefunden wurde. Die Nachbarn, von der überraschenden Neuigkeit verständigt, stimmen dem jammernden Bestohlenen zu, daß nur eines von den Hausleuten selbst den Diebstahl habe vollführen können, weil sich weder an der Hausthüre noch an den mit Eisenstäben vergitterten Fenstern Spuren eines gewaltsamen Eindringens vorfinden lassen. Schon zweimal haben die Bauern die Front sowie die Seiten des Gehöftes in Bezug auf Anzeichen eines Einbruches von Außen untersucht, es ist nicht das Geringste zu entdecken. Das Geld ist aber fort, die Truhe aufgesprengt. Amarellers Jüngster mußte sogleich nach der Entdeckung des Diebstahles hinaus zur Gendarmerie zur Anzeige, und jeden Augenblick steht die Ankunft eines Gendarmen zu erwarten.

Die Bauern erörtern in lebhafter Weise die Frage, wer solcher, in Tirol unerhörter Frevelthat genügend verdächtig sein könnte. Die Inwohner sind durchaus ehrliche Leute, wenigstens bis gestern seit Jahren gewesen; ohne äußere Anzeichen eines Eindringens kann es nicht anders sein, als daß einer der Dienstboten schuldig des Diebstahls ist. Aber wer?

Einer der Nachbarn warf die Frage auf, ob denn der Hund des Amareller gar nichts gemeldet habe. Der dürre Servaz beteuerte: "Sell ischt frei aus der Weis'! No nia hat si' a Dörcher zurwig'wagg und grad heunt Nacht muß selle Frevelthat passiren! Ich versteh' 's nuit, wie sall öpper hat zuageahn können! Suscht so a scharfer Hund, und grad heunt Nacht laßt er aus, der Saggrasultan! I kann's selm nuit verstiahn!"
