Pourquoi me trouvais-je ce jour-l? dans cette ville myst?rieuse et si s?che d'Hamah, o? le vent du d?sert soul?ve en tourbillons la poussi?re des crois?s, des s?leucides, des assyriens, des juifs et des lointains ph?niciens ?

J'y attendais que f?t organis?e une petite caravane avec laquelle j'allais parcourir les monts Ansariehs, pour rechercher dans leurs vieux donjons les descendants des fameux haschischins.

Et ce jeune savant, un irlandais, charg? par le british museum des fouilles de Djerablous sur l'Euphrate, une heureuse fortune venait de me le faire rencontrer qui fl?nait comme moi dans les ruelles du bazar.

Deux europ?ens perdus au milieu de ces maisons aveugles et muettes, sous un soleil torride, ont t?t fait de s'associer. C'?tait d'ailleurs, cet irlandais, un de ces hommes d'imagination improvisatrice qui savent animer chaque minute de la vie et chez qui l'effroyable chaleur de l'?t? syrien d?veloppe cette sorte de po?sie qui vient du fr?missement des nerfs ? nu, une po?sie d'?corch? vif. Apr?s avoir parcouru la ville et pouss? jusqu'aux jardins, qui la prolongent durant quelque cent m?tres sur le fleuve, nous avions vu tout et rien. Quel esprit se cache dans Hamah ?
