Nous sommes tr?s-riches en observations: c'est un fonds qui s'est grossi de jour en jour depuis la naissance des arts jusqu'? nous.

Mais ce fonds si riche, nous g?ne plus qu'il ne nous sert. On lit, on ?tudie, on veut s?avoir: tout s'?chappe; parce qu'il y a un nombre infini de parties, qui, n'?tant nullement li?es entr'elles, ne font qu'une masse informe, au lieu de faire un corps r?gulier.

Toutes les r?gles sont des branches qui tiennent ? une m?me tige. Si on remontoit jusqu'? leur source, on y trouveroit un principe assez simple, pour ?tre saisi sur le champ, et assez ?tendu, pour absorber toutes ces petites r?gles de d?tail, qu'il suffit de conno?tre par le sentiment, et dont la th?orie ne fait que g?ner l'esprit, sans l'?clairer. Ce principe fixeroit tout d'un coup les vrais g?nies, et les affranchiroit de mille vains scrupules, pour ne les soumettre qu'? une seule loi souveraine, qui, une fois bien comprise, seroit la base, le pr?cis et l'explication de toutes les autres.
