On pense bien qu'il n'y avait pas beaucoup de femmes au souper de George, quoique au premier coup d'oeil la seconde des conditions semble assez facile ? remplir; cependant il y en avait quatre ce soir-l?, quatre superbes cr?atures, quatre pur-sang, des anges doubl?s de d?mons, des coeurs d'acier dans des poitrines de marbre, des Cl?op?tres et des Imperias au petit pied, les monstres les plus charmants que l'on puisse imaginer. Malgr? toutes les raisons du monde qu'avait le souper d'?tre fort gai, il ?tait peu anim? : bons compagnons, ch?re transcendante, vins tr?s vieux, femmes tr?s jeunes, des bougies ? faire p?lir le le soleil plein midi, tous les ?l?ments avec quoi se fabrique ordinairement la joie humaine se trouvaient r?unis ? un degr? bien rare ? rencontrer; pourtant un cr?pe de grise langueur s'?tendait, sur tous les fronts. George lui-m?me dissimulait mal une contrari?t? et une inqui?tude visibles que le reste des convives semblait partager. On s'?tait mis ? table ? la sortie des Bouffes, c'est-?-dire sur le minuit. Une heure allait sonner ? une magnifique pendule de Boule, pos?e sur un pi?douche incrust? d'?caille, et l'on ne venait que de prendre place. Un si?ge vide indiquait un absent qui avait manqu? de parole.
