The Image of Christian is a fable about fame, celebrity, and other illusions. Christian answers a "help wanted" ad on the Internet and gets more than the job he desperately needs. His new boss, Grace, owns bits and pieces of this and that all over the world. Despite her success in it, she doesn't have much use for the "Information Age": "This is an age of faith, just like any other. .data gets shaped and moulded by the prophets of this so-called Information Age to create the reality they choose. These are the New Dark Ages, Christian. Ignorance rules, as always." Grace introduces Christian to Aurora Medici , a show-business legend who continuously denies having slept with the Rolling Stones, all five at the same time. Then, after giving Christian vague instructions that he's to find a hostess for a new cable channel and "improve his image" so he can go on to bigger things, Grace leaves town. Grace's long-time rival, Lucille Firman, stays around to bedevil Christian and try to steal him away from Grace as he tries to get his bearings in an unreal world. Christian senses all is not as it seems. He's a decent sort, uneasy about taking advantage of those who seem all too eager to take advantage of him. But he succumbs, sort of. given an unlimited expense account and an endless procession of beautiful women streaming past, what man wouldn't? Why him? He asks the question and finds no answers. Who are Grace and Lucy? That he doesn't ask. they just are. Which doesn't mean it isn't a good question. The gods of Olympus walked the Earth, sometimes as themselves and sometimes in disguise. Humans knew better than to trust them, knew better than to believe they were who they seemed. That wisdom is largely lost in the world of The Image of Christian
